Literacy Program

The literacy program began in 2007 with the purpose of improving recruitment and retention rates amongst the Stable Antar Community. Better literacy also positively impacts other aspects of their wellbeing such as education and health awareness and therefore improves overall quality of life. The program began with 160, the majority of which were women with only 30 men. This was partly due to the fact that men held day jobs, but also partly because women are more open to attending such classes where men tend to be a little more embarrassed. This feeds back to the importance of educating and teaching skills to the young who are more impressionable and keen on developing their thinking in order to escape their hard lives.

he environment in Stabl Antar does not encourage its residents to become educated, be it the high tuition fees, poor-quality teaching, school uniform costs that cannot be spared or the presently low education levels which does not allow people to value the true benefits of education.

Why Have a Literacy Program in Stabl Antar

Poor quality education along with the scarcity of primary and secondary schools in the region relates directly to the other problems that the residents suffer from. Illiterate people find it incredibly hard to secure jobs and greatly limit the type of occupation they can apply for. Moreover, those illiterate cannot overcome such problems by becoming self-employed as this requires a myriad of other skills that they also do not have. Poor education is thus seen as a root cause of their poverty with no way of emerging from this situation without tackling the education issue. Illiteracy also aids ignorance as residents remain unaware of their rights thus aggravating their suffering further.

ProgramOverview

The literacy classes are held at the Stabl Antar Dream centre for 2 hour sessions 5 days a week. Women participants expressed their enjoyment in these 2 hours every day since they could call it theirs, keeping in mind that women in Stabl Antar region do not tend to leave the house and therefore lifted their morale. Furthermore, the literacy classes positively impacted their self-confidence which became evident from their mannerisms, aesthetic appearance and their talking expressions. The literacy program created a bond between the women of Stabl Antar and Sohbet Kheir. It strengthened their trust towards us and made them more keen in involving their children in our organised activities.

The literacy classes are conducted by 6 teachers trained in CLE (concentrated Language encounter) and Paulo Ferrero teaching methods which are specifically designed for literacy programs. At the start of the program, certain incentives were offered to participants to encourage them to enrol and try and invoke a passion to learn. So far the program has taught 344 residents since 2007, and of those examined 220 passed whilst 64 are still to sit exams this year. Some even choose to continue on to Preparatory school once they complete the program where they study at home and are examined in a nearby school, but those who opt for this are.
