Home Our Work Awareness

Awareness Program

The Awareness Program is aimed at two groups of people: first are those women who attend the literacy classes and second are the women at home who may be literate but still require awareness classes.

When the program first began, more emphasis was placed on delivering the information in a door-to-door manner to try and be as friendly and approachable as possible. Now that we are more established in the area and the residents know of our sincerity and good intentions, we tend to deliver the information on a weekly basis at the Stabl Antar Dream centre. The awareness topics are covered in a lecture or seminar format, dependent on the topic at hand.

Awareness Topics

There are four main topics covered by the Awareness Program:

Health

This aims to teach the women of the community on various health issues including hygiene, how to look after their children and importantly how to provide the family with a nutritious meals at low costs. They are also made aware of the prevalent diseases and how to identify symptoms early and get treatment. They also receive information about avian flu which is a major and widespread problem amongst poor and farming areas in Egypt in general.

Social

Since social awareness in Stabl Antar region is completely lacking, women are made aware on issues ranging from how to treat their neighbours to how to raise their children keeping in mind their psychological health and their children rights. We also emphasise the importance of showing their love towards the children, treating them with delicate care and also inform them of how to punish without humiliating them.

Environmental

We are keen to teach the women how to look after their environment, reduce waste and dispose of their waste correctly as clearly this greatly impacts health also. We arranged for the Egyptian Environment Affairs Agency to come and give the women a course specifically designed for those living in shantytowns on how to be environmentally friendly and how to reduce waste.

Religious

The core of our religious awareness is ethics and morals such as honesty, forgiveness, mercy love and compassion. We also aim to reduce the confusion and blending between customs and religion and provide an opportunity to clear up any misunderstandings in an open, friendly environment.

..
Awareness Program Team The Awareness Team are four members from the Stable Antar community which we felt was the most effective method mode of delivery as they will understand their way of thinking and will reduce any anxiety residents may have in discussing more personal topics. This way the awareness team is more likely to get through to the community since they are not unfamiliar but share the same background.

We have hired an Awareness Coordinator, who is not from the area and has extensive experience in this field from his professional psychology background). The Awareness Coordinator is responsible for the Awareness Team and trains them on various delivery methods so that the information is given in the best possible way. Furthermore the Awareness Coordinator monitors and evaluates the team’s performance. The Awareness Team underwent six months of intensive training course at the start which was conducted three times a week from the Awareness coordinator and TOT (training of trainers) from volunteers. Furthermore, the team are periodically trained and meet up with the Awareness Coordinator each week.
