Efficiency and effectiveness of available services

The available services are ineffective and inefficient in solving the poor’s poverty problems, instead making them more reliant on handouts and additional assistance. Furthermore, such assistance never achieves their targeted goals. Small loans are used up for other purposes such as paying lease arrears. The family is left with a burden of servicing their debt, stretching their tight budget further with no visible benefit of the loan in the first place. The donating body does not monitor the loan utilisation to the extent that some ladies approach potential clients and convince them to take out loans by offering to be their guarantors for a charge of 30L.E/loan/applicant
As for the humanitarian aid, although the inhabitants of the area are in dire need for it, it creates a sense of dependence and apathy that turns them into “humanitarian aid recipient professionals”.

Proposals for improving the services from the community point of view:

Establishing a hospital, a nursery and primary school, a police station, a vegetable market and a bread bakery.
